SFV 30th anniversary costumes, MvC Infinite story trailer and more

I need to assure that I update the blog more often going forwards. That said, the last few weeks have seen me busy with a new job role and being quite social in the later period of summer. That won't stop me updating the blog though and the latest update is quite a great (and Capcom-centric) one.

Firstly we have details of new costumes coming to Capcom's leading fighting franchise, Street Fighter. M. Bison, Guile, Ibuki and Karin will all receive new costumes on August 29th, costing £3.29 each. You can check out some screens of them below (thanks Capcom Unity).

Capcom has also shared its most recent story trailer for its upcoming 2-vs-2 tag team fighter, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. You can check this out below.

What do you think of the new costumes for SFV? And what do you also make of the newest trailer for MvC Infinite? Do share your thoughts on the Comments section below. Also share this update via Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

Newest update shows UNIEL:ST's opening, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite and more

E3 has passed by for this year and we're still soaking up the aftermath. Therefore there is still a great deal of information flowing out from this year's game-centric event held in Los Angeles.

In the meantime, Japanese fighting game developer French Bread has shared the opening for its upcoming release of Under Night In-Birth: Exe-Late ST (hereafter referred to as UNIEL:ST). You can check this out via the video below.

The updated version of French Bread's weapons-based fighter is looking
pretty nice

Capcom has also confirmed more additions to the roster of its upcoming 2-on-2 crossover fighter, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. Gamora, Jedah, Haggar, Nemesis, Frank West and Spiderman will be added to the game's initial roster when it releases in mid-September. You can check out some of the more recent gameplay footage via the videos below.

As always, thanks for reading and look forward to more entertainment news updates throughout this month.

Sorry for being gone so long

It has been a few weeks since I've last updated the blog and for that I apologise. There have been a couple of things on the agenda I have had to handle that have taken priority.

Now the house is in order I intend to get back to updating the blog on a regular basis as there is a lot of news to catch up on (and much to look forward to also).

To all my frequent readers, thanks for staying with me. Do look forward to summer exciting updates throughout August.

More information on upcoming titles from E3 2017

As many of you game lovers will be aware, this year's E3 is currently underway at the Los Angeles Convention Centre. Many interesting announcements have already surfaced from this year's event, a few of which you can read about below.

Firstly there's a new trailer for the upcoming crossover fighter Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, showcasing the likes of Dante, Rocket Racoon, Arthur, Nova, Spencer, Dr. Strange, Zero and the mighty Thanos. It shows some of the crossover combo potential available in the game as well as more use of the infinity stones (in this case the Power Stone). You can check this out below.

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is looking nicer as we near that
mid-September release date. Hopefully it will look even smoother
once it hits physical/online retailers.

Capcom has also been nice enough to make a demo of the game's Story Mode available for download. You can find the demo (which clocks in at 5.7Gb) via the link below:

https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-gb/games/marvel-vs-capcom-infinite-demo/cid=EP0102-CUSA08443_00-DUCKDEMO00000000

Xbox One owners can find the demo here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/marvel-vs-capcom-infinite-demo/c07tl9sg62qc

Not to be left out, fighting game developer Arc System Works is currently working on a new 2.5D Dragonball fighting game. The new title is a 3-vs-3 fighter using a graphics engine similar to its recent Guiy Gear Xrd titles. You can check the trailer from E3 out for this below.

One things for sure. The game looks very true to the spirit of
the Dragonball series

A recent post over at Bandai Namco's Twitter account also suggests the game will be seeing a closed Beta this Summer on the Xbox One and PS4. It looks like many of us will be fighting many an epic fight or two in a couple of months time.

In another update, Namco Bandai confirmed that Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom will be getting a release this year on November 10th. A new story-based trailer was shared at E3. You can check this (and all the lovely regional accents) out below.

Lovely as always, Level 5's upcoming sequel is looking
equal parts captivating and charming

Courtesy of Sony's E3 conference we go to see some gameplay footage of Sucker Punch's upcoming Spiderman title. What's good to see is Marvel and the developer caring about producing a great Spiderman title and if the footage is anything to go by, it will be.

You can check Peter Parker's web-slinging antics out that involves villain Mr. Negative via the gameplay video below.

Spiderman swinging around New York, taking goons down
and carrying out superhuman feats. What's not to like?

Finally Sony shared more information on its upcoming reimagining of violent brawling series with Greecian mythical elements, God of War.

This time around it appears Kratos has exchanged the lands of Ancient Greece for a more chilly climate. He also appears to have a son in tow for this journey too (influences of The Last of Us by chance?)

Whatever the case or however arduous the journey, you can check out the latest trailer straight from E3 below.

Santa Monica Studio shows this could be
the greatest and most involving God of War title yet

So those are some of the juiciest reveals from this year's E3. The reveals and impressions will be happening throughout the week so do check back for more updates from E3 2017. Also share what you think of the above in the Comments below. You can also share this on Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

An array of game announcements at E3

So the Christmas for gaming annual event, E3, is underway in Los Angeles with some of the industry's biggest publishers holding their own conferences.

Of note were many of the announcements coming from major American games publisher, Bethesda. Among them were the likes of Dishonoured spin-off, End of the Outsider, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and my personal favourite, The Evil Within 2.

You can check out the trailer for the upcoming sequel to Shinji Mikami's original which saw its release back in October 2014.

Waking up this morning I managed to catch some of publisher Devolver Digital's own conference which appeared to be a result of the presenters all being on some high end drugs. If you want to check out what that was all about, you can do so via the archived stream below.

The next major E3 conference will be Sony's which begins with a pre-show warm-up at 5:00pm PDT (so 1:00am EST for us Brits. Those who're interested may want to have a mild coffee or two later this evening so they don't fall asleep beforehand).

You can check that stream out via any of the links below (I'll try to ratch what I can before I get too tired):

New Street Fighter update adds new DLC character, CFN update, tweaks and more

Hello everyone. I hope you are well and enjoying the blessed great weather this week. To accompany this, read below for the latest fighting game news to come our way.

Firstly Capcom has shared further details about its next update to its front-running fighting title, Street Fighter V. Details over at the Capcom Unity blog reveal that in addition to the newest DLC character, Ed, being added to the game's available roster, a classic throwback stage in homage to Vega's Spanish-set SFII stage will be made available with next Tuesday's update. You can check out a little bit of Vega using the stage's cage fence to scale, then jump from before clawing at SFV's newest entrant below:

Those fence-climbing antics of Vega's
return to Street Fighter once more

The stage will set players back €3.99/£3.29 or 70,000 FM. The throwback Bison Thailand stage will also be getting added back into the game with the new update, costing €3.99/£3.29 or 70,000 FM. The overconfident fist fighter Ed will set you back either £4.99 or 100,000 FM if you want to add him to the game's roster.

Now an ongoing bone of contention has been the small number of means with which to accrue Fight Money in the game. The good news however is that as of May 30th Street Fighter V's new CFN will be made available to all players who download the latest update. This will see a substantial update to SFV's online experience, new balance changes, matchmaking improvements and additional benefits (of which more information can be found right here).

Bison's potential new body sticking it to the old one in style

The beautiful cherry on top lies in the 50,000 FM bonus for signing in at any point from May 30th - June 13th PST (those dates also apply for European/British players too).

The final mention of the new update is further information on the upcoming targets that will be available for completion by those who have purchased the Capcom Pro Tour 2017 Pass. You can find more information about what these entail and what rewards you can obtain from their completion via the handy table below.

Although I think this should be available in the game proper for those who play SFV regularly,
I understand that Capcom needs to make money (this is the company
who re-released Street Fighter II an unfathomable number of time to date after all)

Admittedly this is a huge swell of information for what is surely one of Street Fighter V's biggest updates so far. What do you think of the updates that are coming to the game? Will you be downloading and playing as Ed when he becomes available with the update? And do you think Capcom should do things like sign-in bonuses (and perhaps more double-exp./Fight Money earnings weekends) going forwards? Any thoughts, please do share them in the Comments below. Also like and share this and all my other updates via Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

The magazine scans confirms that the character Erika Wagner will be added to the game's roster for the home release. You can check a couple of images out below detailing the character and a new group shot (which I'm guessing will end up being the game's front cover image):

Street Fighter V's next DLC character is Ed

Perhaps in a surprise to no-one in the FGC, Capcom has unveiled the next character it will be adding to the roster of its famed fighting game franchise, Street Fighter V

Having been (unintentionally) leaked via the PlayStation Store's listing in its Season 2 character pass, Ed is the protégé of burly boxer Balrog and a potential replacement body for M. Bison (hence his flourishes of psycho power during his attacks).

You can check out the trailer for the upcoming character below. He will also be included in the upcoming Beta which will run from May 11th - 14th (Thursday through Sunday). Or will be few to participate for both PC and PS4 players (you done even need to own the game to play).

What do you think of the next DLC Fighter to be added to Street Fighter V? And will you be participating in the upcoming Beta later this week? Do share any thoughts in the Comments section below. Also like and share this update via Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite screens, UNIEL: Exl details and more

This week has felt a little overwhelming with the amount of fighting game news that has been shared on the internet. This here genre fan is doing his best to keep up with it all, however.

Marvel has been considerate enough to share a variety of screens for its upcoming Capcom-developed 2-vs-2 fighter, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. You can check these out below.

Next we have more details on the updated release of developer French Bread's weapons: based fighter, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st].

The latest information from Amazon's product page for the game explains that there will be 4 new characters added to the existing roster. We are already aware of whip-wielding Phonon and power gauntlet-wearing Mika. Dark martial artist Enkidu was recently detailed in this news update over at Gameatsu. That leaves one additional as of yet unconfirmed character to add to the cast.

A recent post over at Shoryuken has rumoured that this could be either Erika Wagner or Uzuki (characters that have either shown up in the existing game's scenario or via concept art.

It wouldn't be too unexpected and more new additions to the existing roster if what is quite the interesting 1-on-1 fighter are always welcome.

There will also be a Capcom Pro Tour competition taking place on Austin, Texas this weekend with its Dreamhack Expo.

Capcom will be streaming many of the matches which you can catch over at its Twitch channel here.

That's all the news I've got for you avid readers for now. What do you make of this recent flood of information? Will you be watching any of the fighting taking place at Dreamhack this weekend? And which fighter are your looking forward to the most this year? Feel free to share your thoughts on the Comments section here on the blog. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite has a new trailer

Hello eveyone. I hope you are well at this time of year when the weather is as uncertain as the country's future (maybe). To brighten up our outlook, Capcom shared a new trailer for its upcoming 2-vs-2 fighter, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.

The latest in Capcom's crossover series is returning to the 2-on-2 format established in the earlier Marvel/Capcom crossover titles. This trailer shares footage of long-term Street Fighter mainstay, Chun-Li, everyone's favourite green avenger, The Incredible Hulk, possessor of one cool laser sword and various robotic assistants, Strider Hiryu, and Norse demi-god and wielder of the might hammer Mjolnir, Thor. The villain from Avengers: Age of Ultron also makes an appearance, displaying his prowess and abilities.

You can check out the latest trailer for the game below:

Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev2 scheduled to launch on May 26th in Europe

In a recent announcement by publisher PQube via Twitter, it has been confirmed that the latest in the Guilty Gear franchise, GGXrd: Rev 2, will be coming to the PS3/PS4 in Europe on May 26th.

The next entry in ASW's recent revival ofits weapons-based fighter,

Guilty Gear Xrd:Rev 2

The update will add characters Baiken and Answer to the existing roster. The existing characters Jam, Kum Haehyun, Raven and Dizzy will also get story scenarios as these were missing from GGXrd: Rev.

Baiken's three-hit wonder of a super

Chipp's PA and all-round
business ninja, Answer, joins the fray

Those interested can either purchase the standalone physical or digital release on PS4, and as a $19.99 digital upgrade to Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev for either the PS4/PS3 (an educated guess would suggest that it will be £19.99/€19.99 for the upgrade on the UK/EU PSN and £39.99/€39.99 at retail).

Players of characters like Sol will have a hard time
keeping track of Answer's agile movement during battle

A variety of new costumes inbound for SFV

As mentioned earlier, the volume of fighting game news means I wanted to split these into different updates. Here's the second one.

As mentioned in my earlier post, this last week has seen a swarm of information from developers of some of the most beloved fighting game series on the market. One of those is Capcom with Street Fighter V.

Despite the disappointing announcement of the eponymous developer having to delay its latest major update to its current mainstream fighter, it has been more forthcoming with its details about new costumes that will be added to the game next week on April 25th.

Concept art for the throwback to Bison's SFII Thailand stage

Its first post over on the Capcom unity blog details that they will be adding a nostalgia stage and three school-themed costumes to the game next week. You can check these out via the screens below:

Chun-Li is doing her best impression of a
Chinese honours student
As expected, Juri is fronting a very punk-inspired take
on the traditional school uniform

Ryu donning his kenka bancho getup

Capcom confirms that for those who want to rule the schoolyard, each costume will be available on April 25th for $3.99 / ¥400 / €3.99 (expect them to come in at £3.29 on the UK PSN then).

The next update earlier today from Capcom Unity shares information about additional DLC costumes that are on there way for Alex, R. Mika and Chun-Li. You can check these out via the images below:

Did Capcom staff watch Magic Mike for
inspiration with this fireman costume
for Alex?

Ever the consummate professional,
its Chun-Li in her business suit

I guess rowdy cheerleader matches
R.Mika's personality

Capcom believes that for those who want to rock the workplace, these costumes join the previously announced School Costumes and will be available on April 25th for $3.99 / ¥400 /€3.99 each (again, the wallet-pleasing price of £3.29 each for the UK PSN).

So what do you think of the recent costume announcements? Do you think they are too highly priced? (we're talking about Capcom here though). Feel free to share any thoughts on the Comments section here. Alternatively you can share this update via Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

A substantial fighting game update

In what could be regarded as somewhat overdue, this last week has been full of updates regarding some of the biggest fighters currently on the market. I'm going to detail them below.

Firstly is the news that The King of Fighters XIV has received four new DLC costumes for characters Kula Diamond, Meitenkun, Sylvie and Angel. Your can check these out via the trailer below:

There has also been quite the deluge of information regarding Capcom's famed fighting game series, Street Fighter V, over the last week. The most important update would be that Capcom has confirmed that it is to delay the release of the third character (of six) from its Season 2 of DLC for the game's roster.

Although this is slightly disheartening the general consensus would suggest that the fighting game community (FGC) is alright with the delay, preferring that Capcom gets it right rather than rush the next major update to CFN/DLC character out of the door before they are ready.

Although we will have to wait a little longer to find out who
the next character is, hopefully it will be worth it.

The reassuring news is that the newest DLC character will be announced by Capcom soon and will be made available to play with the next Beta they are to arrange (wait until you see the backlash from the part of the FGC that gets angry over the new character being playable that way before the game proper though).

What do you think of the new costumes for KOF XIV? And how do you feel about Capcom delaying its next update for SFV? (those familiar with the game will have experienced this last year with the DS delayed release of Ibuki of a DLC character for the game so perhaps its not that surprising to some). Feel free to post any thoughts in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this update via Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

(N.B I'm going to put the additional news updates in a separate post as adding it all here might be a little too much for one single post.)

KOF XIV's v2.0 update and DLC characters are now live

In a swift turnaround from their initial announcement back in February this year, SNK has released four new DLC characters for The King of Fighters XIV in tandem with its recent v2.0 update of the game.

The characters joining the existing 50-character roster include WhipRyuji YamazakiVanessa and Rock Howard. They are available on PSN in all regions now with the characters costing either £3.99 standalone or £14.99 as a bundle on the UK PSN store.

Rock, Vanessa, Yamazaki and Whip join the fray in
The King of Fighters XIV

You can check each character's profile via the link below (although it goes to the SNK Japan website the profiles are in full English):

With only releasing on April 5th this week, players are already getting to grips with the characters and what they are capable of with the mechanics available in KOF XIV. Check out the combo video covering the DLC characters below to get a taste of the combos that players have already figured out.

Just a taster of what the new characters are capable of
(there's even crazier combos than those shown here)

All things being said, the v2.0 update and the DLC characters are shaping up to be some pretty awesome additions to a game that at launch was in a pretty solid state to begin with. If SNK continues in this fashion going forwards we may end up with a KOF entry that has the biggest roster to date.

Would you prefer SNK to continue updating KOF XIV? If so, what characters would you still like to be added to the game's roster? Or would you like them to make a true sequel to this in the next 2-3 years with updated mechanics and a shake-up of the roster? Any thoughts, share them in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this on Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

New FOC stages for KOF XIV trailer

Continuing with the regular updates, SNK has released a trailer for the FOC stages that will be added with tomorrow's update for its latest title, The King of Fighters XIV. Check it out below.

The above two stages are a throwback to Terry's Garou Densetsu Special stage
and the Monaco stage from KOF '97

These will be free to download for all when the version 2.0 update drops on PSN tomorrow. The recently confirmed DLC characters will also be available to purchase once PSN has been updated on Wednesday (you can check the trailers and further info about WhipYamazakiVanessa and Rock by clicking on their names).

Are you happy that SNK is added FOC content to KOF XIV? And will you be buying any of the four DLC characters that will be added to the existing roster tomorrow? Feel free to share your thoughts in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this on Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

GGXrd Rev 2 opening, details and gameplay video for KOF XIV's Rock Howard

A slew of new information has been shared by developers Arc System Works and SNK. Check out the details below

Firstly we have the opening for Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator 2 which saw release in Japanese arcades on March 30th last week. You can check this out via the video below.

The latest version of ASW's long-running series, GGXrd: Rev 2

This version adds the one-armed, eyepatch-wearing female samurai and returning series favourite Baiken. Joining her is political aid to Chipp Zanuff and the ever-ready business ninja, Answer. You can check how their character images out below.

One bad-ass (and one-handed) samurai, Baiken.
Always ready to send you a business card,
Chipp's PA, Answer.

Developer SNK also cared to share a gameplay trailer for one of its upcoming DLC characters for The King of Fighters XIV, Rock Howard. You can check out what he is capable of (and how stylish he looks in-game) via the trailer below.

Surely that's no way to treat the man who raised you as a foster father now Rock

What do you think of the recent announcements from both Arc System Works and SNK? Will you be playing GGXrd Revelator 2 or KOF XIV due to these recent reveals? And do you hope to see any more characters added to the ever-growing rosters of either series? Feel free to share any thoughts in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this via Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

KOF XIV's 4th DLC character confirmed as Rock Howard

Although perhaps spoiled earlier in the week, SNK has confirmed the last DLC character it plans to add to its team-based fighter, The King of Fighters XIV.

Pleasing many an SNK and fighting game fan, the last character to be added is none other than the protagonist of Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Geese's son raised by series' lead Terry Bogard, Rock Howard.

You can check his character trailer out below.

This character that has perhaps been the most requested
in KOF's 23-year long history

Although a price point hasn't been set for him yet, Atlus has suggested they will be charging $5.99 for the earlier-announced character Whip, therefore that could be an indication of what we can expect to pay per character (no doubt the conversion to £/€ will be unfavorable once again.

The good news is that all four DLC characters are coming with the game's next update on April 5th so there's not too long to wait.

What do you think of the recent announcement? And what do you think of the upcoming DLC characters? Post your thoughts in the Comments section below. Alternatively your can share this on Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

A triple threat of KOF XIV news

I've managed to bring my laptop back to life; therefore I have a means of working properly from home again rather than a PC here and there. With that out of the way, the King of Fighters XIV news continues to flow out of developer SNK.

The first announcement is confirmation of the third DLC character of four that are in the pipeline. This time the svelt boxer and agent, Vanessa, makes a return to the series after her last appearance in KOF XI. You can check out her trailer below.

The snappy and swift boxer Vanessa returns to KOF

We have also been treated to a couple of short gameplay clips for the previously announced DLC characters, Whip and Ryuji Yamazaki. You can check these clips out below to get an idea of how they have transitioned into 3D.

Old comrades at war; Whip vs Ralf

Garou's insane yakuza and Muay Thai champ; Yamazaki vs Joe

And lastly we have news of a potential leak for the fourth DLC character for KOF XIV. Although it could still prove to be incorrect, an image was posted on the net recently that appears to show KOF XIV's character select screen with the much longed-for protagonist of Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Rock Howard (thanks Eventhubs). You can check out the image captured from what appears to be a debug PS4 below.

It may not be real but fans have longed for Rock's inclusion
in KOF since his introduction in Mark of the Wolves

So we have quite the wealth of new information for the upcoming DLC characters in KOF XIV. What do you think of them? Are they the characters you hoped SNK would choose to add to the existing roster? And  do you hope the fourth and final character is Rock, or would you prefer it to be another returning character? Any thoughts, share them in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this update on Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

SNK confirms second KOF XIV DLC character as Yamazaki

Riding on the wave of last month's confirmation that additional characters will be coming to The King of Fighters XIV, SNK confirmed on Wednesday who the next DLC entrant will be. Its time to welcome back the insane Japanese yakuza with the dyed blonde slick-back hair, Ryuji Yamazaki.

It looks like SNK hasn't forgotten the parts of his personality that make him so fun to use. You can check out his character trailer below.

Ever the pyschotic yakuza, Yamazaki makes his grand return

What do you think of the latest fan-favourite addition to The King of Fighters XIV? Are there any additional characters you would like to see added to the current game's roster in the near future? Any thoughts, feel free to share them in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share this on Facebook, Twitter or your social media network of choice.

First The King of Fighters XIV DLC character confirmed to be Whip

As per my previous post on the blog back in February, I shared that SNK would be revealing more details regarding the additional DLC characters it plans to add to its latest team fighter, The King of Fighters XIV.

Perhaps in efforts to please long-term fans, the first character was recently revealed on Wednesday this week and is none other than the former Ikari Team member and able whip user, Whip. Check out her character trailer below.

The whip-wielding Ikari Warrior returns to KOF

She is due for release on April 5th with a price tag of $5.99 (make of that what you will for how much she will be in £/€).

What do you think of the first confirmed DLC character for KOF XIV? And who do you hope to see for the remaining three DLC characters? (this image from my previous post shows four bodies unless there's an non-human character inbound?) Any thoughts, please share them in the Comments section below. Alternatively you can share my recent updates via Facebook, Twitter or your social network of choice.

Games I played in 2016 - Part 3

Like many great trilogies, this series of articles is reaching the end of its road. Here I recount the final selection of titles I got my hands on last year, what I enjoyed about them, what frustrated and surprised me in bizarre and exciting ways. Read on to see what made it into Part 3 of my Games I played in 2016 series.

Blizzard's latest title, a 6-vs-6 team hero shooter
with oodles of personality

Overwatch

The first-person shooter genre has been at its peak for some time now. It is also a very popular genre which gets over-saturated at particular times of the year (mainly around the lead up to the Christmas period to be precise). Although it may have been surprising to some that of all developers, World of Warcraft maker Blizzard had decided to step into not just this popular genre but that of arena team shooters, Overwatch has proven that the highly successful developer has a capable hand when taking on a new project.

Presented as a team-based shooter where the player picks from a selection of 23 heroes (21 were available at launch with an additional 2 added in the last year), matches see players join a team in 6-vs-6 battles where a number of objectives are played for on a variety of maps (escorting a payload, defending a point, elimination, capture the flag and more) in order to emerge victorious. You might wonder what makes Blizzard's effort that different to Team Fortress 2? The honest answer is not a great deal. However with the developer's level of polish, high production values and what on the whole appears to be a generally well-balanced title, Overwatch shows it could very well be THE team shooter of this generation.

Much to the game's benefit, each hero comes with a selection of skills available to them during play (some can be selected during battle, others are passive and so on). They allow a range of benefits from dashing to double-jumping, teleportation, health recovery, flight, increased firepower, cloaking, shields and so. The beautiful thing about these is that they are available from the start without any need for levelling characters up for extra abilities (levelling allows players to obtain loot boxes which contain mainly aesthetic items and goods). This means a new player can jump right in and try out the likes of Tracer, Widowmaker, Reinhardt D.Va, Genji or any of the available heroes without worrying about having access to all of their tools from the outset.

The initial group of heroes that are selectable in Overwatch.
They're a diverse group full of personality and energy.

It allows players to very quickly find out which character types work best for them and discover a few favourites from the cast early on.  These decisions also play into team synergies too which is where the game's depth really shows. A team that has a solid Reinhardt or Zariya up-front with Tracer, Reaper or Genji supporting whilst Hanzo or Widowmaker are sniping from afar and Lucio, Zenyata or Ana are providing ample support can become quite the unstoppable force against a disjointed and uncommunicative opposing team.

Even with these types of odds where the flow of battle is very much in favour of one team, the existence of character ultimates can really help turn the tide of battle around at crucial moments. These are built up over time and can be helped along the way with good performance during play (i.e high kill counts, great assists, healing many around you, etc.) Once maxed out they can be unleashed on the battlefield and have a range of effects such as Reaper's matrix-style spinning blitz of bullets in a crowd, Mercy's ability to resurrect the whole party, Hanzo's arrow that turns into intertwining spirit dragons or D.Va's mech that self-destructs with an AOE explosion. It keeps the matches exciting and allows for an additional level of dynamic play that can effect the outcome of a match in the closing seconds.

Overwatch's launch trailer. Unlike other titles, it is one of
many trailers with Pixar-esque production values.

Upon booting Overwatch up players can jump right into Quick Match which normally finds an available match within 30-40 seconds. Elimination, 3-vs-3 battle, anything goes custom matches and 1-vs-1 modes are also available to play. There are also occasional seasonal events such as for last year's Olympics, Halloween, Christmas and the recent Chinese New Year event which ended earlier this month. These provide modes unique to the event, adding more variety to the proceedings. Ranked Matches can also be played but players are required to firstly reach lv. 25, after which they will play ten placement matches before they can start to earn league points for the game's current season. Here you will find some of the most ruthless competitors as their solo capabilities are as strong as their team synergies, resulting in some very challenging but rewarding matches played.

On the whole I think Overwatch's greatest achievement is making me as someone who doesn't typically play FPS, let alone team shooters, not only interested in the game after playing it via one of the free weekends but actually go out and buy the PS4 version. Call me a convert but Blizzard has created a great title here and if the confirmation of future content being free is true then I hope they support this title for years to come (if those CGI shorts are anything to go by, perhaps we could get a CGI film sometime in the future please Blizzard?)

One of the first Tales of games to receive a release
on Sony's (ill-fated) handheld, the PS Vita

Tales of Hearts R

The first portable entry in the Tales of series that I managed to play, Tales of Hearts R is a remake of the original title that saw release on the Nintendo DS. Redesigned with full 3D models, a world map, an updated battle system and two additional characters added, this portable JRPG has much to offer for those interested in getting into the series.

Players begin their journey as preppy and upbeat lad Kor (the original character is named Shing but his name got changed in the translation for some reason). In the game's introduction he is living with his grandfather Zex in the quiet coastal village of Seaville. Training his soma (a weapon linked to the player's soul), he enjoys his life but desires to experience the outside world. At the same time two black-haired youths are shown trying to escape from a humanoid creature looking not unlike a crayfish in her armour. Caught on the edge of a high clifftop, the humanoid (named Incarose) fires and orb of energy at the duo who end up diving into the sea below to escape.

The next day the young female of the two (name Kohaku Hearts) washes up on Seaville's shore which is where Kor finds her. After giving CPR, Kohaku regains consciousness and smacks Kor aside before apologising and introducing herself. Soon after they come across Kohaku's brother, the hot-headed Hisui. The three return to Kor's home to meet his grandfather Zex, shortly after which Incarose manages to catch up with them. They are easily overpowered and only escape due to Zex's intervention which sadly results in his death at the hands of Incarose.

Despite the harsh introduction to the game, players soon set out into the world of Organica as the trio venture to find the shards of Kohaku's spiria due to being attacked Incarose, then Kor using his soma to create a spiria link in order to cure her but instead causing the shattered spriria to be cast across the game's world. During their journey they meet additional friends, foes and party members that join the group. In Tales of Hearts R two additional characters join those available in the original game in Chalcedony (and NPC in the original DS release) and dual-axe wielding somatic, Gall.

The eight members provide a healthy variety of options in combat with emphasis on long-range combat, healing, buffs, direct attacking, aerial combat and magic use. It allows players to support their preferred playstyles as you can choose whee your party members start on the battlefield, whether they go all out or keep their distance and customise their actions even further through buying battle orders at various stores throughout the game. Players can choose who their party leader will be in the event you want a change from Kor and the game's battle system allows players to equip Artes to different directions on the D-pad or right analogue stick, making them easy to access during the midst of battle.

Some of the gang Kor and Kohaku join up with
in Tales of Hearts R. They become quite the
likeable and trustworthy group over time.

The journey of recovering the shards of Kohaku's spiria is not the entirety of Tales of Hearts R's story and although I won't get into spoilers here I found me time playing the game to completion quite enjoyable. This entry in the long-running series is doused in a good amount of charm which I have found to be a recurring element of the series to date. When I get to my next Tales of title (whether that be one of the older entries or the recently released Berseria) I hope it is able to continue this trend. Tales of Hearts R is another strong entry in the Tales of series and worth playing if you want a good traditional JRPG for your portable.
